If you have found articles telling you to use the UTS app — ignore them. The UTS (Unreserved Ticketing System) app was officially discontinued in January 2026 and permanently shut down on 1 March 2026. Indian Railways replaced it with the RailOne app.
Here is how to buy a Mumbai local train ticket in 2026.
Option 1: RailOne app (recommended)
RailOne is the official Indian Railways replacement for UTS. Available on Android (Play Store) and iOS (App Store) — search “RailOne Indian Railways.”
Steps:
1. Download RailOne and open it.
2. Register with your mobile number — OTP verification required.
3. Tap “Unreserved Ticket” for a single journey.
4. Select your origin and destination station.
5. Choose class: Second Class (general) or First Class.
6. Select number of passengers.
7. Pay via UPI (Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm), card, or net banking.
8. A QR code ticket appears in the app. Show it at the entry gate or to a ticket checker on the train.
Important: For single-journey tickets, the app requires location access and you must be within 5km of your origin station at the time of booking. Season pass booking has no location restriction.
Discount: RailOne gives a 3% discount on all digital payment tickets.
Option 2: Automated Ticket Vending Machine (ATVM)
Available at all major suburban stations, near the main entrance.
Steps: Select “Unreserved Ticket” → tap your destination station → choose Second or First class → pay by UPI, card, or cash → collect the printed paper ticket.
Keep the paper ticket. Ticket checkers operate on platforms and inside trains.
Option 3: Counter
Walk to the booking window, state your destination station and class, pay by cash or card. Fast during off-peak hours. Expect queues at 8–10am and 6–8pm.
Fares
Second class (general):
– 1–3 stations: ₹5
– Short journey (e.g. Andheri to Bandra): ₹10
– Medium (e.g. Andheri to Dadar): ₹10–₹15
– Long (e.g. Andheri to Churchgate): ₹15–₹20
– End to end (Virar to Churchgate): ₹25–₹35
First class is approximately 4–5x the second class fare. Much less crowded, ceiling fans, same journey time. Worth it for longer journeys.
Season passes
For regular commuters, monthly and quarterly passes are available via RailOne → “Season Ticket.” Covers unlimited travel between two specified stations for the pass duration.

FAQ
Q: Is the UTS app still working in 2026?
A: No. The UTS app was permanently discontinued on 1 March 2026. Download the RailOne app from the Play Store or App Store.
Q: Do I need an app to buy a Mumbai local train ticket?
A: No. Tickets are available at the counter or automated machine at any suburban station. The RailOne app is faster and gives a small discount but is not required.
Q: Can tourists use the RailOne app?
A: Yes. Anyone with a mobile number can register. International numbers work for OTP verification.
Q: What is the difference between first and second class?

Q: What happens if I travel without a ticket?
A: Travelling without a valid ticket is a punishable offence. Ticket checkers operate regularly on platforms and inside trains. Always buy before boarding.
